Heathrow to get 24-hour tube link at weekends

Good news for bleary eyed travellers and Colnbrookians – Heathrow is to get a limited 24 hour tube link to central London.

The city’s mayor Boris Johnson announced the improvement, which will come into force in 2015, as part of a series of enhancements to the underground network.

Observers are expecting it to mean more weekend flights – although it will be be bad news for airport hotels and taxi drivers who have prospered from the current system. At present services finish around midnight with a resumption after 0500.

Mayor Johnson said:

For 150 years the Tube has been the beating heart of London, its tunnels and tracks providing the arteries that have transported millions of people and helped to drive the development and economic growth of our great city. Now it is time to take the Tube to the next level and so for the first time in London’s history, we will provide a regular 24-hour ‘Night Tube’ service at weekends.

Johnson says the plan will not just boost jobs and the night-time economy, it will further cement London’s reputation as the “best big city on the planet” in which to live, work, visit and invest.

Details of train times will be announced later.
