Parish Council: “residents need to demand replacement surgery”

The Parish Council remains the best hope for bringing a GP surgery back to Colnbrook according to the Slough Commissioning Group, in a radio interview earlier today.  But the Parish itself is calling on residents to mobilise a letter-writing campaign to the NHS, Langley Health Centre and commissioning groups.

Alex Tilley, the Associate Director of Primary Care for the Slough Commissioning Group, told BBC Radio Berkshire’s Andrew Peach that the Parish Council is working with it and the practice on the possibility of a new surgery somewhere in Colnbrook.

She was asked by the current affairs presenter what, in the long term would bring GPs back to Colnbrook itself, rather than have cross the M4 and wrestle with the lack of bus service provision between Colnbrook and Langley.

The three parties are continuing to look at “a couple of options” within the Colnbrook area that have been identified by the Parish Council, Ms Tilley said, including the possibility of “an extension to an existing building, a change of use of an existing building, or brand new premises”.

The interview can be heard on the BBC website here.

When you make a doctors appointment tell the receptionist you would like it in Colnbrook. The more demand there is the more likely it is to happen

The Parish Council itself played down any hope of a new surgery, with no mention of any ongoing activity in a statement posted on its website on Tuesday.

In the statement it noted that while the health commissioning groups had indicated their support for a future Colnbrook surgery, no immediate options were available:

“NHS England have indicated that if a feasible proposition can be made funding for a temporary surgery could be considered during the construction or conversation stage of the project. Many existing buildings have been considered but rejected as unsuitable.”

Instead, the Parish Council is urging residents to write to demand a replacement surgery and request a Colnbrook appointment if they book an appointment prior to the surgery closing.

“… the Parish Council would encourage all to write to Langley Health Centre, NHS England and Slough CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) pressing for a replacement Surgery to be established without delay. There has always been a surgery in Colnbrook since the formation of the NHS. We don’t want to lose it. When you make a doctors appointment tell the receptionist you would like it in Colnbrook. The more demand there is the more likely it is to happen.”

While the report on the closure by the Slough Clinical Commissioning Group indicated that Langley Health Centre “has been forced to submit an application for closure of their Colnbrook branch surgery with effect from 27 March 2017”, the Parish Council has stated that dilapidation works will commence on the 13th February – “unless a last minute change of heart is made by the premises landlord”.

The landlord has demanded a 45% rent increase, considered by the CCG to be “an extremely high rent, that exceeded the District Valuer’s valuation”.

The Parish Council’s Finance & Policy Committee will hear a report on the current situation when it meets next on Tuesday (17th January) at the Village Hall.
