Slough residents gear up for two-day carnival
A spectacular, multicultural arts event, Night of Festivals has been enthusiastically welcomed by Slough residents with over 100 people signing up to take part in the two day carnival.
Night of Festivals will be taking place in Slough High Street on 30 and 31 May, and throughout both days there will be continuous carnival activity, with a dazzling array of giant puppets, animal themed costumes, samba dancers and live music.
A key part of the action will be 100 local Slough residents taking part as carnival performers, working with professional artists Mandinga Arts and Paraiso Samba.
The organiser, Artreach, is delighted with the response from local people in Slough who have enthusiastically embraced the idea of being carnival performers.
Young people involved with Britwell Youth Centre, SWIPE, Creative Academy and local schools have all signed up to play parts varying from a section of funky skeletons to a dancing troupe of frogs, cows and bulls. In addition four brave young men will be animating a thirty feet high giant skeleton.
Alisha Kadri, community arts officer at Slough Borough Council said:
“It’s not everyday that a carnival comes to Slough so it’s great that we have had such a huge and positive response from local residents.
“Artreach have delivered this in other areas and it really is a spectacular performance to watch. The colours, music and costumes are quite amazing so it’s definitely one not to be missed.”
Jamie Green, organiser from SWIPE said:
“Night of Festivals is going to be a fantastic experience for our young people and for thousands of people in Slough who will enjoy the carnival performances. Our group can’t wait to get started and to get animating those skeletons!”
Sean Wright from Britwell Youth Group said:
“Once we saw the amazing costumes created by Mandinga Arts we knew we had to be part of this very special event. I will be dressing up in costume myself.”
Rehearsals start in earnest on 10 May and Slough shoppers and residents will be able to enjoy the carnival performances and other ingredients of Night of Festivals from 11am – 5pm on 30 May and 11am – 10pm on 31 May.
