The unexpected by-election for Colnbrook Parish Council did not just cause upset locally. Slough Borough Council had to call an Extraordinary Council Meeting two weeks ago to allow the election to go ahead and appoint Catherine Meek, Head of Democratic Services, as Returning Officer for the by-election set for August 20.
The cost of a by-election for Colnbrook Parish Council to replace district councillor Avtar Cheema and her daughter Jaspreet could be £10,000, chair Cllr Peter Hood has claimed.
Cllr Elum-Smith has advised Colnbrook Views today that Slough Labour has met and agreed to put up two candidates for the vacant positions on Colnbrook Parish Council, but a by-election is unlikely until August.
Slough’s Returning Officer Kevin Gordon has issued a Notice of Vacancy for the TWO positions on Colnbrook Parish Council remaining unfilled as a result of the Cheemas failing to take office. Avtar Kaur Cheema and Jaspreet Cheema, who came second and seventh in terms of numbers of votes in the parish election on May 7, have now fallen foul of the Local Government Act 1972 and been disqualified. Former clerk Roland Hewson has posted on these pages that the Parish could face a big bill for another election: “Its a shame that this is the procedure and that those who caused the problem cannot be made to pay any costs!”

Ex-Councillor Jarrett has confirmed he has submitted a Code of Conduct complaint to Slough Borough Council. The request could plunge the council into special measures with taxpayers paying the cost of any investigation.
