The real hub of the village!
This website was set up 3 years ago – in November 2009 – when SIFE first reared it’s head. Johal was causing outrage and nobody was reaching out to concerned residents bar the indefatigable Jan Bowder in Vicarage Way. What hope would we have to defeat the bigger challenge looming?
Every community needs a hub and our objective was simple: inform people and get them talking and you will discover the true power of that community.
The online response to SIFE was a promising start: 116 of you participated in an online survey, with an overwhelming 85% against. A strong message – slightly more convincing than the 6 letters received from residents by SBC, but nowhere near the 1,000 objections Radlett managed in just six weeks of the equivalent Planning Application being submitted there.
Many of you complained later you hadn’t heard about it, but we have made great strides there too. With local news stories breaking here now we get 2,500 visits in a typical month. June’s unveiling of the clock saw 381 visits on one day alone! Both the Slough Observer and Express have picked up stories from us.
Perhaps more importantly nearly 300 comments have been posted this year so far and nearly 1,000 votes cast in online surveys about village matters. Much as it grates with some, we can now validly claim to be the village portal and a barometer of community opinion.
Ironically the site would probably have closed at Christmas. It costs to keep it running, and it’s a thankless task to keep it updated. Thanks to Mike Nye, and thanks to all the messages of support in the past two weeks, this site shall remain open.
So to those naysayers: tough. Expect more questioning and more public scrutiny. Colnbrook demands greater accountability, more transparency and, above all, respect for the people you were elected to serve. If you don’t like fair reporting and community discussion, walk away. Make way for somebody else; the many active people in our village who want to do some good.
And to those regular visitors who keep coming back, thanks for making it worthwhile!
