Windsor MP issues warning over ‘obsession’ with expanding Heathrow
From the Windsor Observer:
Adam Afriyie, Windsor MP, has hit out at an “obsession” with expanding Heathrow in the Airport Commission’s Interim Report published today.
Mr Afriyie said:
I’m deeply disappointed that this report appears to be obsessed with Heathrow expansion. It’s no secret that I am dead set against any further Heathrow expansion, which is a short-term sticking plaster to the UK’s aviation capacity problem. The Commission must listen to residents and businesspeople, and not just the loud cat cries of Heathrow’s shareholders. I am especially disappointed that the Commission says that Heathrow could close if a new hub airport was built. This is scaremongering, plain and simple. Alongside local residents and campaign groups, I will continue to fight tooth and nail against Heathrow expansion.
Mr Afriyie also called for the Thames Estuary hub airport idea to be added to the shortlist.
The report will explore in greater detail proposals for an airport on Grain Island, in North Kent, in 2014 to decide whether it should be considered on the shortlist.
The Windsor MP added:
A Thames Estuary airport provides a long-term solution and shows the world we are serious about the future of our country. If the UK is to become an outward-facing, well-connected country that exports around the world, we will need four or more extra runways over the next 50 years.
